BBC Studios and Post Production Delivers Children in Need Strictly Come Dancing Trail in 3D

October 2010: BBC Studios and Post Production (BBC S&PP) has made a stereoscopic 3D Strictly Come Dancing trail for Children in Need at Television Centre. Its 3D team, along with 3Ality Digitals Stereographer Scot Steele, provided full studio and post production services for the three-minute 3D film featuring an Argentinean tango. Recorded in October, the trail will be shown in selected UK cinemas and TV retailers in the run-up to the annual Children in Need appeal on November 19.

BBC S&PP employed three separate 3D rigs –an Element Technica Quasar rig, a radio linked PS Technik freestyle rig and a 3Ality Ts2 rig. BBC S&PP Smoke artist Nial Brown edited the trail in the Entertainment Village at Television Centre on the newly upgrade Smoke 2011 Advance.

Craig White, Head of New Business and Entertainment says: “This hugely exciting project was an important milestone in our ability to create high end, high quality 3D content. It is the latest in a number of projects which has built our expertise and experience in multi-camera 3D from capture through to delivery and we're delighted to be supporting Children in Need.”

BBC S&PP works with a range of media and production companies, making programmes for all broadcasters, including Sky, ITV, Channel 4, Five and the BBC. It recently upgraded its Studio Six at Television Centre to 1080 50P high definition, with 3D capability. From the ground upwards, the studio can handle and display both 1080 50P and Stereoscopic 3D.

The 3D recording was a collaborative project driven by BBC Entertainment and Events and BBC S&PP. The initiative is part of the BBC's ongoing experiments into 3D which are headed up by Danielle Nagler Head HD/3D BBC. The piece was directed by Nikki Parsons a regular director of Strictly Come Dancing.
