Tonight’s the Night – BBC Studios and Post Production supports new HD entertainment show

April 2009: BBC Studios and Post Production is supporting the new glitzy Saturday night entertainment series Tonight’s the Night, enabling ordinary people to live out their performing dreams for real and become the most unlikely stars that Saturday night has ever seen. This could mean duetting with a favourite pop group, singing with a big band or tripping the light fantastic with the cast of a hit West End musical.

Hosted by West End, Doctor Who and Torchwood star John Barrowman, Tonight’s the Night features everyone from local community heroes to enthusiastic amateurs, with a hidden talent they have been yearning to unleash. With the help of John and the best talent in the business, their wishes are fulfilled - no matter how big, small or bizarre.

Six pre-recorded shows will transmit weekly on BBC One from 18 April. The shows are being recorded in high definition in Studio Eight, BBC Studios and Post Production’s flagship HD studio comprising 10,000 square foot of HD and the Post Production team is editing them at its Entertainment Village based the fourth floor at Television Centre.

The Studio Director Richard Valentine and the VT Producer Kate Mullan, are working closely with Post Production Editors Rob Platt and Nick Peto to create the edits.

Tonight’s the Night is being edited in HD on Avid Symphony Nitrus DX. As well as cutting the live multi-camera studio shows, Rob and Nick are responsible for various VT inserts, including hidden camera footage of members of the public who are invited to sing with their celebrity idols. Other inserts include a workplace strand, with performances from different professions, for example Engineers and Teachers and Stage Fright, where John comes head-to-head in a challenge with a celebrity guest.

Tonight’s The Night begins on BBC One on Saturday 18 April.
