Revving Up for F1 – BBC Television Centre operation mirrors OB

April 2009: BBC Studios and Post Production is supporting BBC Sports’ F1 coverage which returns to the BBC for the first time in 12 years for the 2009 season. The BBC has a five-year deal to broadcast F1, which will run from 2009 to 2013 inclusive, and includes exclusive rights to TV, radio, full broadband and mobile. The Post Production team is working closing with OB partners SIS Live, to ensure a seamless workflow between the Television Centre editing operation and the OB set up.

This project is using the Apple FCP edit platform and the Post Production Sport team has expanded its Apple Xsan shared storage server by 30TB to support the work in progress and incorporate archive footage from F1 2007 and 2008 seasons. The media and directory structure held on this system is being replicated on the OB Xsan.

Programme features are being edited at BBC Studios and Post Production Final Cut Pro facilities at Television Centre and the project information and media are then being re-linked to the media on SIS OB Xsan. Live footage ingested on the SIS Live EVS servers is being exported, via an EVS XFile drive and then connected to BBC Studios and Post Production’s EVS server before being imported to the Xsan for editing. These processes ensure the Production team has access to the same media whether working at base on or location.
