Sound Investment - BBC Post Production launches new 5.1 suite
February 2009: BBC Post Production is launching a second 5.1 sound suite, the Blue Theatre, in response to a growing customer demand for 5.1 mixing and to support the BBC’s HD channel requirements. BBC HD coverage is extending to 9 hours daily in 2009 and surround sound is preferred whenever possible.
A Digidesign Pro Tools HD system and an Icon Dcontrol ES control desk have been installed and the new 5.1 sound suite will connect to the existing second and fourth floor editing network as well as the East Tower Pro Tools suite, enabling full media transfer capabilities without the use of tape.
In addition, a track laying room is also being upgraded to Pro Tools, enabling production teams to benefit from a complete integrated digital sound workflow. This facility, as well as providing standard track laying services, will also enable productions to deliver 5.1 on tighter budgets by providing a stereo to 5.1 upmixing service.
The Blue Theatre complements BBC Post Production London’s first 5.1 sound suite, the Red Theatre, where Oceans, the recent HD science series for BBC Two and Discovery was mixed by Chris Graver and Steve Hudson.
BBC Post Production’s sound team was recently nominated for two sound awards at the RTS Craft Awards for its work on the critically acclaimed BBC One drama series Criminal Justice and Natural World Badgers - Secrets of the Sett.
BBC Post Production works in partnership with a variety of broadcasters and production companies. All its sound suites in Television Centre are being refurbished and the new facilities will be available for customers this month.
