New 5.1 Sound Mixing and Monitoring at BBC Studios
August 2008: BBC Studios, part of Resources Ltd, has installed a new 5.1 HD sound mixing and monitoring area. It successfully completed its first live transmission on Saturday 9 August for the BBC One show Last Choir Standing.
The area mixes the sound for live and complex HD productions, in tandem with one of the two, soon to be three, HD studios based at BBC Television Centre in West London. The area was specified, designed and built in-house by the BBC Studios team, as a permanent replacement for a number of temporary areas previously used for the 5.1 sound for HD transmissions such as Strictly Come Dancing, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? and Joseph.
BBC Studios provides facilities and staff both in West London and Elstree to support both the BBC and a wide range of independent production companies, making programmes for BBC, ITV, C4 and Five, Sky and other broadcasters. BBC Studios' third HD studio, Studio Four, will be ready in the autumn.
