Creating bespoke production facilities for Endemol’s Deal or No Deal for Channel 4

September 2013: BBC Studios and Post Production is designing and building new production facilities for Endemol at Bristol’s largest film and TV studio complex, The Bottle Yard Studios. From here, BBC Studios and Post Production will continue as a trusted production partner for Endemol, providing technical services and crew for the multi-award-winning hit Channel 4 game show, Deal or No Deal.

BBC Studios and Post Production has provided production facilities for Deal or No Deal since 2010, so far delivering four successful series, including the critically acclaimed live programmes and taking the show HD in 2012. Currently based at the Bristol Paintworks, a site now earmarked for redevelopment, BBC Studio and Post Production worked with Endemol to find a new site that could be tailored to meet the production’s specific requirements.

The 3000 square metres unit, part of The Bottle Yard Studios complex, is being transformed from an empty warehouse into a fully functioning studio and post production facility. The technical fit-out is being delivered in just four weeks, in time for series 10, which starts recording at the end of October 2013. As well as technical facilities, BBC Studios and Post Production is providing audience -holding, costume and make-up areas, dressing rooms, production offices, catering area and edit suites. These are all located within the same warehouse space at The Bottle Yard Studios, making it highly convenient for the production team and enhancing the security of the site.

Clare Pickering, Director of Operations at Endemol says: “BBC Studios and Post Production has helped us find a fantastic new home for Deal or No Deal and together we’re pulling out all the stops to ensure what was an empty warehouse is a fully functioning TV studio in time for recording the new series in October. We are looking forward to making more nail biting episodes at The Bottle Yard Studios this autumn.”

Anna Mallett, CEO of BBC Studios and Post Production “We have a long history in creating bespoke facilities for production companies and broadcasters and we’re delighted to be working with Endemol to make Deal or No Deal from a new home in Bristol”.

Fiona Francombe, Client Liaison and Site Manager for The Bottle Yard Studios, said: “We are delighted to have the Deal or No Deal team joining us. We’re lucky to have a huge amount of flexible space as part of The Bottle Yard Studios complex – meaning BBC Studios and Post Production are able to build a bespoke studio to meet all the needs of the Deal or No Deal production.”

The technical set up from Paintworks will be redeployed to The Bottle Yard Studios. It comprises vision mixers and Hitachi cameras provided by Gearhouse Broadcast; a flown lighting truss provided by Elstree Light & Power; and lighting provided by Film & TV Services. BBC Studios and Post Production’s own kit at the site comprises a Studer mixing console, camera pedestals, SR decks and XDCAM decks.

The company also manages the entire workflow, providing the studio crew, sound staff, vision team and engineers. On-site post production will continue to be handled by The Farm using its own editing and finishing workflow solutions in a facility provided by BBC Studios and Post Production.
